Alternative Cardiology
I look at cardiovascular disease with a focus on the
prevention and reversal of chronic disorders of the total
body system with the heart in particular.
As for acute ischemic coronary syndromes and cardiac
arrhythmias, this article is not presented as an alternative
to excellent existing cardiology methods. Rather, it is
directed at those who find the cholesterol and inflammatory
theories of atherogenesis unsatisfactory and the notion of
coronary artery disease (CAD) as a plumbing problem
untenable.
An air pump works well when it pumps clean air. A water pump
works well when it pumps clean water. A blood pump is
expected to work well when it pumps clean blood. The heart
is but a blood pump. It follows that CAD is, first and
foremost, a problem of "dirty" blood. The circulating blood,
as I clearly establish in my writings, has two guardian
angels: the bowel and the liver. I consider CAD essentially
to be a consequence of disruptions of the bowel and liver
ecosystems. In the matter of prevention and reversal of CAD,
I show how the real issues can be effectively addressed only
by assessing and restoring those ecosystems.
Safety first.
Acute coronary ischemic states are life-threatening. Optimal
pharmacologic intervention is critically important for
managing those crises.
That is clearly the domain of
experienced clinicians in conventional cardiology with full
access to optimally equipped coronary care units. I have
elected not to address that subject. Rather, my thrust is on
nutritional, ecologic, and detox therapies that restore
redox regulation and oxygen homeostasis, and so address the
real underlying causes of acute and chronic coronary
ischemic syndromes.
Until recently, all nonpharmacologic and nonsurgical
therapies for CAD were dismissed as unscientific at best and
outright fraud at worst. Indeed, physicians interested in
reversing CAD with antioxidant and chelation therapies could
do so only at the risk of losing their licenses. For
cardiologists to show some openness to those therapies was
certain to draw reprimand from the hospital and/or state
professional groups. The possibility of an integrative
physician co-managing individuals with CAD simply was
unthinkable. As late as the fall of 2002, some at the New
Jersey Board of Medical Examiners were determined to bar
EDTA chelation for CAD in the state. Fortunately some of
that is changing now.

I would like to turn my attention to two dominant chronic
problems of our time:
1. Ecologic disruptions of the bowel, blood, and liver
ecosystems that result in perfusion deficits which, in turn,
cause myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accidents,
renal failure, Alzheimer's disease, and a host of other
clinicopathologic entities; and
2.Ecologic disruptions caused by toxic metals that result in
a host of energy disorders fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue
syndrome, and others-autoimmune states, ecologic, and
degenerative syndromes.
Coronary artery disease is a consequence of spiritual
dysequilibrium and disrupted bowel ecology. That may amuse
some cardiologists. In the following links, I marshal
evidence for that view.
